PREPARING FOR SURGERY
MEDICATIONS
**Important** As of January 2021, all of your prescriptions MUST be submitted to your pharmacy electronically
Not all pharmacies have an adequate supply of all medications, and not all pharmacies are open after hours
In order to avoid any problems getting your medication after your surgery, your prescriptions will be called in to your pharmacy days before your surgery
Please make sure we have your correct pharmacy on file
Please pick up your prescriptions the DAY BEFORE YOUR SURGERY
MEDICAL CLEARANCE
You may be asked to get a medical clearance prior to your operation. This depends on your age, the type of procedure being done, and whether or not you have any medical problems. This can be performed by either your primary doctor or by the pre-operative clinic at our hospital (Texas Institute for Surgery). Please don’t wait until the last minute as this process may take time and can delay your surgery. Diagnostic testing, including an electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, and labs may need to be performed. If you see a cardiologist for your heart or a pulmonologist for your lungs, you may also need to see these doctors for clearance.
EDUCATING YOURSELF ABOUT THE SURGERY
We want to make sure that you understand your surgery and what is involved in your recovery. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call and ask. Furthermore, we have made a Frequently Asked Questions section that outlines some of the most common questions that arise around the time of surgery.
Please click here to go the the FAQ section and select the page for the surgery that you are having.
**Important: Please look at the FAQ section ahead of your surgery. It is often easier to take in before surgery than when you are trying to recover from your surgery.**
BEFORE SURGERY
Our surgical team will contact you before surgery to notify you of the time of your surgery and to tell you when to arrive at the hospital/surgery center. Please remember that surgery is not always predictable. The surgical time is an estimate, and your surgery may take place later or earlier than scheduled.
The night before surgery, please remember not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the evening prior to surgery, aside from sips of water with medications. You may brush your teeth, but do not swallow the water.
SUPPORT
You will need a family member or friend to bring you to the hospital/surgery center the day of your surgery, stay at the hospital/surgery center during your procedure, and transport you home. If you are having out patient surgery, you will need someone to stay with you the night after your surgery.
STAYING IN THE HOSPITAL
Some surgeries may require an overnight stay in the hospital. This usually happens on the first floor of the hospital. Pack a bag with everything you would like to have with you during your stay. Plan ahead for transportation home on the day of discharge.

AFTER SURGERY
Immediately after surgery, Dr. Raynor will speak with any family members waiting during surgery, so please have them available via the phone number that you give us. After surgery, patients will wake up in the post-operative recovery room. Once you are sufficiently awake, you will be transferred either to the step down unit for same-day surgery, or to your overnight room if you are staying the night. This is when your family/visitors will be allowed to see you. This may take some time after the actual surgery is over.
Physical Therapy (PT)
Physical therapy will be a critical component of your recovery following most of the surgeries that we perform, especially if there is a repair or reconstruction involved. It can be very helpful to already have this set up for after your surgery.
Click here to see our list of recommended physical therapists.
You will be given a PT protocol and prescription in your folder after your surgery to give to your physical therapist.
POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
You will have written post-op instructions in your surgical folder that you will leave with after surgery. Click here for a list of those post-operative instructions if you want to look at them ahead of time or if you have misplaced yours.
